Tarentula know for some years more and more important charm on behalf of the general public. These indeed, are more often presented in exhibitions, films and of numerous reports.

Although they are venimous, little are really dangerous for man. They prefer very often rather to use their hairs which they throw in the face of their opponent by rubbing itself the belly, rather than "to waste" their poison so precious.

Their ways of life, tree-dwelling or terricole, are particularly specialized and are adapted to their diversified environment.

Their reproduction is very interesting. Some protect for a long time their offspring against the animals of prey and go as far even as feeding them. Who would have think of finding so much maternal instinct to this animal with hairs?

Their maintenance in captivity is generally rather easy except the problem of temperature (between 20 and 28 C °) common to any exotic animal. A terrarium of modest size (20 in 30 cms) can be enough for the maintenance of an adult who will be able to hope to live there more than 10 years. For the food, they feed according to their size and age of flies and mealworms, crickets, locusts, cockroaches and young mice for the biggest.

Afin to acquire one of them, we would not too much know how to advise you to consult people already possessing these animals or associations as the GEA (to see links). Tarantulas are venimous and are not a real pet which one walks on the shoulders or from hands to hands. Furthermore, many are protected by the Washington's Agreement CITES (to see links ) and require papers (invoice or transfer).

Pterinochilus "usumbara" A fitted out well terrarium !

For the beginners, choose the following labourer : Brachypelma albopilosa, smithi and Lasiodora parahybana.

For the tree-dwelling: Avicularia metallica but of average size (babies are relatively fragile). This list is naturally not exhaustive.

Many things remain to discover on this arachnides in sometimes strange and curious but always very fascinating customs to be observed.
Heteroscodra maculata
And do not forget, you have to deal with wild animals and venimous !!!

Then, CAUTION...
